This is something that as adults we take for granted, but kids really have a hard time tying up their shoes. Thanks to velcro, kids can get away without learning how to tie their shoes these days. But, in reality, by age 5, a child is expected to know how to tie a knot and zip up his/her jackets before they go into Kindergarten. At least, we did way back then. Doing research on tips on how to teach my 5-year old the proper way to tie his shoes, I bumped into this fantastic website called Ian's Shoelace Site! It is all about tying shoelaces. Ian gave Moms' Buzz permission to use his images to illustrate some of the different methods for teaching our kids how to properly tie their shoes.
There are two basic ways to tie a shoelaces that I think we may all know about, the Standard Shoelace Knot or "Around The Tree Shoelace Knot." In this one, you make a loop with one end, wrap the other end around it and pull a loop through. This is the one I mostly use myself. It kind of starts like this:
The Two Loop Shoelace Knot or the "Bunny Ears" in which you create two loops at each end and then tie the knot. It's often tied incorrectly, resulting in an un-balanced "Granny Knot" as Ian puts it. This is how I think most of us learned how to do it when we were kids. It starts like this:
But, Ian has introduced a new way, called the Ian Knot, the world's fastest shoelace knot! It is a revolutionary way of tying the shoes, and it is also more secure - this is what we moms need! Make a loop with both ends and simultaneously pull them through each other to form an almost instant knot:
To get the step-by-step scoop on how to properly tie shoelaces using any of these 3 methods and teach your kids through images, visit Ian's site. Your kids will love it! And, by the way, Ian also has a great page all about different shoe lacing methods.
Tying those "lose ends" will take one more chore off our plate!
