The best treatment for sunburns is prevention!! Prevention is basically what we discussed in yesterday's post. Let's quickly review it:
"Slip" - slip on shirt
"Slap" on a hat and sunglasses
"Slop" on the sunblock/sunscreen
We learned these 3 words from www.KidsHealth.org, and are quite easy to remember: Slip, Slap and Slop - is how we prevent sunburns. However, in the event sunburn does happen to your child, Moms' Buzz put together this nice table that tells you what to do:
Mild Sunburn (may be treated at home) |
Severe Sunburn (requires medical attention) Call a Doctor if your Child Has |
1. Remove your child from the sun right away. 2. Place your child in a cool (not cold) shower/bath or apply cool compresses several times a day. 3. Avoid creams or lotions that may hold heat inside the skin or may contain numbing medication. DO NOT put butter or toothpaste on the burn. 4. Offer your child extra fluids for the next 2 to 3 days. 5. Give your child ibuprofen (i.e., Motrin) or acetaminophen (i.e., Tylenol) as directed, if necessary to relieve pain. 6. Make sure all sunburned areas are fully covered to protect your child from the sun until healed. |
1. Sunburn that forms blisters or is extremely painful; 2. Facial swelling from sunburn; 3. Sunburn that covers a large area; 4. Fever or severe chills 5. Headache, confusion, or a feeling of faintness; 6. Signs of dehydration a. increased thirst b. dry eyes c. dry mouth 7. Signs of infection on the skin – increasing: a. redness b. warmth c. pain d. swelling, or e. pus |
Again, the best treatment is prevention and the "slop" cannot be left behind: sunscreen/sunblock. It really only takes a minute to apply it.
The table above is available for download sunburns.pdf and printing for your convenience. You can also found it on the left sidebar under Useful Documents.
This summer, don't forget to slip, slap and slop!

I know this sounds completely crazy but vapor rub is not just for colds anymore!! It is the greatest relief for sunburn I know of. I work with teenage girls, who are absolutely impossible when they get burned!! We use the vapor rub on their burnt skin and it takes out the itching, burning and stiffness.
Try it.... what have you got to loose?
