We all know as parents how difficult is to take picture of kids. Having them stay still as though they are made out of wax is just impossible - they are a constant moving target - the little one and the older ones alike. The say "cheese" has become too cheesy and other commands to smile don't seem to work either. So we need tips because picture time is coming to town soon be it at school, soccer, or any other event your child may be involved this Fall. Plus, the holiday season is a few blocks away although the stores are making it feel like it is tomorrow, and we need to prepare those XMAS cards with family picture. Besides, if you are volunteer at your child's school or preschool for Picture Day, you may want to know these tips provided by 5 mom photo pros:
Tip #1: Cut the cheese
Tip #2: Quantity begets quality
Tip #3: Get real
Tip #4: Let the sun shine
Tip #5: Know when to say when
Tip #6: Make time for fun
Tip #7: Don't forget the milestones
Tip #1: Cut the cheese
Those commands to smile and say "Cheese" force children make very strange smiles that do not capture who they are. And, you won't get a authentic snapshot.
Tip #2: Quantity begets quality
If you want a couple of fabulous pictures of your child, you should plan on taking about 75 photos! Don't give up easily. Like most everything else about raising a child, improvisation is key. Bottom line: Always have your camera ready — you don't want to have that once-in-a-lifetime moment pass you by.
Tip #3: Get real
Sometime the best images are of a child who is not smiling. So, don't always aim at getting "happy faces" in your pictures. The best pictures of children are the ones where you have their attention. Their eyes are sparkling and they're giving a genuine, warm look, a familiar look — like how you see them every day.
Tip #4: Let the sun shine
Perhaps the number one thing you can do to improve your family photos is this: Turn off the flash. Steer your child toward natural light sources — place them next to a sunny window or go outside. Get in the habit of opening the curtains when you're taking pictures during the daytime so that the entire room is illuminated. What you're looking for is the way light is reflected in your child's eyes. Sometimes it's just a matter of slightly repositioning yourself or the child to capture that light.
Tip #5: Know when to say when
When you're busy snapping away, it can be tricky to know when to give it a rest. Depending on their age, they will start to get fussy or they won't make eye contact anymore. Just backed off for a while, and start again.
Tip #6: Make time for fun
Home sometimes is the right setting to take nice family or candid pictures. Try a different place where you can play together for a bit, let them get fully engaged, and then start shooting. For a XMAS picture, playing out in the snow, you may get the best shots!
Tip #7: Don't forget the milestones
While capturing the everyday leads to great shots, don't let the special days slip by.
Get that camera ready and starting shoot away!
