I bet you have seen this all over the supermarkets these days taking up gradually more shelf space in the vegetables section, a new leaf lingo: Mesclun. So, what exactly is a mesclun, why not a simple Spring mix?
Mesclun is a mixture of young greens. In addition to including lettuce, it may have things like baby spinachalong with savory chicory and sometimes edible flowers as well.
The word comes from the Provencal French mesclom, which is derived from misculare, a Latin word meaning “to mix.” As the name implies, the primary characteristic of mesclun is that it includes a diverse mixture of greens. Because the greens are harvested when young and crips, they tend to be extremely tender and often highly flavorful, and rich in minerals and vitamins.
Greens in mesclun can include chicory, frisee, dandelion greens, lettuce, spinach, sorre, chard, mustard, radicchio, chervil, and many more.
They are easy to find prewashed and baggest at most supermarkets, of course, the mix of greens varies from brand to brand.
