This weekend you can enjoy tax-free purchases on children's clothing and school supplies.  For more information on this tax-free holiday weekend, please click here or the School Supplies & Clothing Holiday page. The three-day sales tax holiday for school supplies and clothing begins at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August, August 7, 2009 and ends at midnight on August 9, 2009.

During this three-day period, purchases of certain school supplies, clothing and footwear will be exempt from the Virginia sales tax. Each eligible school supply item must be priced at $20 or less, and each eligible article of clothing and footwear must be priced at $100 or less. 

Other States such as Maryland and DC offer the same tax break for back-to-school during a different time period, check with the taxation department of your State for more information.

Tips to Prepare for a Healthy Back-to-School Start

During the "fun" time of the summer and that of summer vacation, it is easy to forget our healthy school year practices. Here are some simple healthy tips to remember to get the kids back on track for healthy start for back to school:

1. Eat breakfast - don't skip it!
2. Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables.
3. Make wise anack choices such as crackers, cheese, milk shakes, yogurt and pudding.
4. Limit consumption of soft drinks and candy.
5. Drink at least eight glasses of water or home made juices, low sugar.
6. Exercises at least 60 minutes a day 9 (camps, pool, playgrounds, Wii sports, etc.)
7. Wear sunscreen.
