There has been a rise in overweight children, which means that parents need to be proactive and take an active role in providing healthy snacks for their children. Below are some healthy snacking tips that I have found to be useful, easy to implement and effective:
- Keep snacks small.
- Don't eat snacks straight out of the package.
- Snack only when hungry. not bored or "feel like it."
- Limit sweet snacks such as brownies, cookies and candy because these are often loaded with empty calories and sugar.
- Offer fruits and vegetables to complement.
- Offer low fat cheese with whole grain crackers or pretzels.
- Select snacks from the Food Pyramid.
- Quench thirst with water, home made juices or low fat milk, not soft drinks.
- Read food labels - if first ingredient is sugar is a big NO, NO!
