Many of us with our busy schedules we do not pay much attention to product labels. Because we are moms and care for the health of our family, we actually do pay attention to drug labels, especially more so when it is a doctor's prescribed medicine - we want to make sure we follow the doctor's instructions and dosage by the text. But, with over-the counter drugs, we tend to be a bit more relaxed about it. So, here are 5 tips on how to read a drug label:
- Check active ingredients. This way you will exactly what you are getting plus if you see a generic brand (i.e. drugstore's) with the same active ingredient, you may even save some money there.
- Avoid multisympton products. This is a biggie! These drugs tend to conain extra ingredients that may trigger unwanted side effects.
- Read warnings and check side effects. If you know you are susceptible to side effects or you have to drive you do not want to take a drug that's going to make you sleepy.
- Follow direction exactly. Remember something, taking a bit more here and there does not necessarily make the drug more effective. Don't play the doctor's role if you are not! First consult with your doctor if you are not feeling better.
- Check the expiration date. Another biggie! Toss any out-of-dadte-drugs!
