"Up!" - the New Pixar's Movie in Theaters Today!

Picture 15 It seems this weekend movie theaters will be a bit crowded due to the official release of the new Disney-Pixar's new 3-D movie Up! Critics are saying Up is a stunning 3-D adventure that will be an upper for the entire family.  The film is visually stunning, surprisingly touching, funny, and unsurprisingly delightful as all Pixar's movies.

The story is about Carl Fredricksen who spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Junior Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life.

Easter Eggshell Votives - An Easy to Make Craft

Easter eggshells don't need always be filled with chocolate or other goodies.  You can transform Easter eggshells into votives for your table or as an Easter hostess gift. It's so easy to make that you can involve your children in this project.  Here's how to make Easter eggshell votives:

Eggs_shells_votives

Material:

  • Egg shells as many as you would like
  • Egg cups to use as the base
  • Food coloring
  • Egg carton
  • Warm and hot wax or tealight candles

Instructions

  1. Make a hole in the top of each egg with a pin; enlarge the holes, and pour out the yolks;
  2. Clean shells;
  3. Then dye them with food coloring (follow package directions).
  4. Nestle shells in a carton.
  5. Cut wire-core wicks to 4 inches long, flatten one end, and fasten in shell with a bit of warm wax.
  6. Using a funnel, fill shells with hot wax (tinted with dye pellets). Let the wax cool. Trim the wicks, and light.

An alternative is to use tealight candles instead of using pure wax.  You would need to make the egg holes large enough so that you can insert the tealight candles.

Spring Cleaning with Kids - Clever Tips

ankAh little and/or young helpers can make up a fantastic cleaning crew at home! As Spring starts knocking at our doors soon, you may want to enroll your kids into your Spring cleaning chores through clever cleaning assignments.  Children love to help and feel useful to parents so  don't truncate their natural disposition to collaborate.  Although it may take longer to get a chore done or require more creativity and some child psychology, the more they help you, the more they will always help you as they grow up.

Springcleaning_2

So, here are some tips that you could use to engage your kids in Spring cleaning in the weeks to come.

Clever and Fun Tips to Engage Your Kids into Spring Cleaning

  1. Make a "to do" list that's clever and inspiring.
  2. Keep cleaning sessions short. A 5- or 10-minute clean-up session, accompanied by upbeat music, is something the whole family can get into.
  3. Find chores for all ages. Preschoolers enjoy helping with clean up, and can easily dust. Elementary-age children are experts at polishing. Teens can wipe car interiors clean, etc.
  4. Assign animal attributes. Make a joke about each person's cleaning style, likening it to the behavior of a particular animal: turtle (slow and steady), etc.
  5. Play Dust Ball Derby. Whoever finds the biggest dust bunny gets to choose a movie for family film night — or play DJ for your next 10-minute tidying session.
  6. Spray and wash. Your teenager, a garden hose, and a bottle of window cleaner designed to be attached to the hose can make your outdoor windows sparkle in no time.
  7. Be gone books. Have each family member gather three or four books she doesn't need anymore and designate a box in the car as a collection point.
  8. Gather old clothes, toys, and DVDs the same way. Give kids "credits" every time they donate something to the box.
  9. Repaint your child's bedroom. There's a clean-up factor built right in and your child can work alongside you every step of the way.

Read the full article here for more ideas related to each of the 9 items listed above.

Happy Spring cleaning!

How did Halloween start in the US?

The celebration of Halloween started in the United States as an autumn harvest festival. In pioneer days, some Americans celebrated Halloween with com-popping parties, taffy pulls and hayrides.
In the late nineteenth century, with the large influx of Irish immigrants into the U.S., Halloween became associated with ghosts, goblins and witches.

What are Jack-o-lanterns, what is the legend?

Jack-o-lanterns are an Irish tradition. In Ireland, oversized rutabagas, turnips and potatoes were hollowed-out, carved into faces and illuminated with candles to be used as lanterns during Halloween celebrations.  According to legend, the jack-o’-lantern began with a fellow named Jack, who was too stingy to be allowed into Heaven and too mischievous to join the Devil in hell. As consolation, the Devil threw Jack a lighted coal, which Jack placed inside a turnip he was eating. It is said that Jack continues to use the coal to light his path as he searches for a final resting place.

What does the word "witch" mean?

The word “witch” comes from the Old Saxon word “wica”, meaning “wise one.” The earliest witches were respected dealers in charms and medicinal herbs and tellers of fortunes.

Where do pumpkins originally come from?

The pumpkin originated in Mexico about 9,000 years ago. It is one of America’s oldest known vegetables. Pumpkins generally weigh from 15-to-30 pounds, although some weigh as much as 200 pounds. The majority of pumpkins are orange, but they also can be white or yellow. They are rich in vitamin A, beta-carotene and potassium, and their seeds provide protein and iron.
