Four Sun Safety Tips by MommyDocs

Et854b8u_3 As summer nears, the MommyDocs help parents make sense of the many sun protection products available for kids. From SPF level sun cream choices and sun-protective clothing to innovative solutions like sunscreen wipes and laundry wash, www.mommydocs.com offers four tips to help parents assess products and formulate the best sun protection strategy for their family. Read four sun safety tips below.

Four Sun Safety Tips

Learn the lingo and shop for sunscreen:  SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. Everyone needs a sunscreen with a SPF level of 15 or higher and “broad spectrum” coverage (both UVA and UVB rays). Look for ingredients such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, oxybenzone, avobenzone, sulisobenzone, and mexoryl.

Wear sun protection clothing and gear: Even kids should wear sunglasses that provide 99-100% UVA and UVB protection and a wide brim hat. For sun-protective clothing, look for an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 30 or greater.

Establish a routine:  Make applying sunscreen part of your child’s daily routine. Apply it 30 minutes before going out and use enough to cover exposed areas.  Don’t forget to reapply every two hours or sooner if swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

Pack and use sunscreen:  Give sunscreen (with application instructions) to your child’s camp counselors, babysitters, daycare providers, etc. to ensure reapplication throughout the day.  As your child gets older, he may be able to reapply it himself with prompting such as, “Every time you come out of the pool, spread more sunscreen over your face and body.”

Bedbugs - A Hot Topic These Days!

Have you heard it in the news yet?  Bedbugs is the new thing [disease] now on rise in the United States.   When Moms Buzz first heard about it from a friend was completely puzzled with the "bed what?" face.  OK.  Here is the scoop now that you may be traveling for Spring Break with the family and staying in hotels, where they are mostly found so far, beware!

What are bedbugs?

Bbmatress Bedbugs are small, flat, and wingless insects. Like mosquitoes, they feed on blood from animals or people. The bugs range in color from almost white to brown. They turn rusty red after feeding.

The bugs get their name because they like to hide in bedding and mattresses. They usually hide during the day and are active at night when they feed. They can live for 10 months, and they can go weeks without feeding.

Bedbugs do not seem to spread disease to people. The bites can also cause an allergic reaction in some people.  See a picture of a bedbug.

Where can you find bedbugs?

Bedbugs are found worldwide, but they are most common in developing countries. Once rare in North America and Europe, bedbugs may be on the rise in these areas.  Bedbugs are most often found in hotels, motels, hostels, shelters, and apartment complexes where large numbers of people come and go.

Because bedbugs hide in small crevices, they can come into your house on luggage, furniture, clothing, pillows, boxes, and other objects. The bugs can hide in beds, floors, furniture, wood, and paper trash during the day.

How do you know if you have bedbugs?

The first sign of bedbugs may be red, itchy bites on the skin, usually on the arms or shoulders. Bedbugs tend to leave straight rows of bites, unlike some other insects that leave bites here and there.  Look for these other signs such as the bugs themselves, especially along the seams of mattresses; tiny bloodstains on sheets and mattresses; dark spots of insect waste where bedbugs might crawl into hiding places on furniture, walls, and floors.

Tips: Get Answers to Your Questions About Your Intimate Apparel

Nm165q_mn_2 We all have questions about our "underthings" apparel. Moms' Buzz is glad to bring you answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding your intimate apparel.  These intimate tips come directly from a true expert, Mary Krug, the Vice President of Intimate Apparel at Neiman Marcus.

Question: How often should I be professionally fitted for a bra?

Mary Krug: At least once a year, but more often if your weight has fluctuated more than a few pounds, you have given birth recently, or you have undergone a breast augmentation or reduction.

Question: How do I know when my bra is worn out?

Mary Krug: If you bra is "talking" to you during the day; that is, it is uncomfortable, you're constantly tugging at it, the straps are falling down, or you can't wait to take it off the minute you get home, it's time to toss it.

Question: What should be in every intimate apparel drawer?

Mary Krug: At a minimum, you need three basic bras (the ones you reach for every day): 2 in nude and one black. Just remember "one to wash, one to wear, and one to air." Then you need a good strapless, a convertible that accommodates different necklines, sports bra for exercise, shapewear (both regular and high-waisted), a liner or slip, and several different pairs of panties to wear with a variety of silhouettes. And, of course, a sexy lace bra and panties for a special occasion.  Don't forget the opaque hosiery and tights - a must-have for fall's fashions.

Now you heard her, do what you need to do!

Parenting: Getting Involved at Your Child's School

Tout_bts_walk_3 Now that our kids are on a regular schedule, and so we are, one of the things that are always in the back of our mind is  "should I volunteer at school or not"?  Whether you are a working mom or a stay at home mom, our schedules are so busy that we always doubt about volunteering one more item into our booked agendas.

If you are looking for an encouragment to getting involved in your child's school, Moms' Buzz gives it to you:

You will be happy to know that whether your child is just starting kindergarten, entering the final year of high school, or is somewhere in between, there are many good reasons and opportunities for you to volunteer at school. It's a great way to show your child that you take an interest in his or her education, and it sends a positive message that you consider school a worthwhile cause.

Today, schools offer many opportunities for parents to get involved as little or as much as they want to.  Here are some examples of activities in which you can offer to volunteer.  Some are more involved than others, but you can always indicate to what extent you can/want to help:

  1. act as a classroom helper.
  2. mentor or tutor students.
  3. help children with special needs.
  4. volunteer in a school computer lab.
  5. help organize, cater, or work at fund-raising activities such as bake sales or car washes.
  6. act as a lunchroom or playground monitor.
  7. help to plan and chaperon field trips, track meets, and other events that take place away from the school.
  8. help to plan and chaperon in-school events (i.e., dances, proms, or graduation ceremonies)
    organize or assist with a specific club or interest group (if you have an interest in an activity that isn't currently available to students, offer to help get a group started - for example, a chess club or cycling team.)
  9. assist coaches and gym teachers with sports and fitness programs or work in the school concession stand at sporting events.
  10. help the school administrators prepare grant proposals, letter-writing campaigns, or press releases or provide other administrative assistance.
  11. attend school board meetings.
  12. work as a library assistant or offer to help with story time or reading assistance in the school library.
  13. sew costumes or build sets for theatrical and musical productions.
  14. work with the school band or orchestra or coach music students individually.
    help out with visual arts, crafts, and design courses and projects.
  15. hold a workshop for students in trade or technical programs.
  16. spend some time with a specific club or interest group (approach the teacher who sponsors the group.)
  17. volunteer to speak in the classroom or at a career day, if you have a field of expertise that you'd like to share.
  18. supervise or judge experiments at a science fair.
  19. If you are a mompreneur offer to have your booth at the school's festival or fair.

If none of these examples suit you, ask your child's teacher, who will likely be glad to help you think of something!  Keep in mind that when volunteering at your child's school, the work you do not only benefits your child, but will enrich the classroom, the whole school, and the entire community by providing students with positive interaction, support, and encouragement.

Happy volunteering!

Babies: Bathtime Dos and Don'ts

Cosatto_seaside_bath_set_3 We know, you are all pros at bathing babies, but it does not hurt to be reminded of the Dos and Don'ts of bathtime.  Many times, especially, if we have other children, we tend to get distracted and we do the Don'ts and we don't do the Dos. Here they are:

  • DON'T START TOO SOON - begin regular baths after your infant's umbilical cord falls off (about 1-3 weeks after delivery.) Before then, stick to sponge baths.
  • DON'T OVERBATHE - 2-3 times a week is enough to stay clean without drying the tender skin.
  • DON'T OVERFILL THE TUB - 2 inches of water is plenty and helps avoid the risk of drowning.
  • DON'T GET DISTRACTED - Turn away, even for a second  and your child could be at risk of drowning. If the phone rings, which so typical, let it go to voicemail. If there is a knock on the door, ignore it or if your other child needs something, bundle the baby up and take him with you.
  • DO BUY THE RIGHT STUFF - you will need a soft towel, preferably hooded, a baby washcloth to fit between tiny toes; and a baby body wash that does double duty as shampoo.  Do not use your other child's body wash or shampoo as they tend to be too strong for a baby skin and hair.
  • DO TEST THE TEMPERATURE - use your elbow, your wrist, or the back of your hand to make sure you won't be scalding sensitive skin.

Plus, keep in mind this Baby Seat Alert: when your baby has outgrown a kiddie tub, you might be tempted to buy a bath seat. Don't! Bath seats have been associated with more than a hundred death and injuries, and our U.S. Consumer Reports have found them unsafe.

Bubble trouble is not fun!

Back to School: Lunch Box Ideas PART III

Istock_000001077786xsmall_2 Part of this week, we are dedicating it to prepare our busy readers for the "back-to-school" time with tips on how to build a fun, easy, tasty and nutritious lunch box.  Here are more ideas and tips to do that.  Plus, we include in this post a nice downloadable PDF document of cute, loving and fun notes and jokes that you can add to your children's lunch box.

More tips and ideas you will love...

1. FREEZE: Place a frozen juice box in your kids’ lunch box as it’ll keep the food chilled and will be thawed by lunchtime.

2. Go for VARIETY: Make sandwiches using whole grain tortillas, bagels or pitas.

3. WIPES, WIPES: Pack antibacterial wet wipes so your kids can clean their hands before and after eating.

4. SNEAKY VEGGIES: Add grated veggies to sandwiches and wraps for crunch – your kids won’t notice they’re eating something that’s good for them!

5. DRESSING It up: Use small resealable bags to pack dressings. Kids can open one corner and simply squeeze onto salad, then discard.

6. Get DIPPING! Pack salsa, hummus, yogurt or salad dressing for your little ones to dunk their sandwich, veggies or fruit into.

7. PETITE works better: Make bite-sized and mini versions of regular foods like sandwiches. They work well for small appetites and are more likely to be eaten.

8. BE LOVING: Add a quick note to say good luck on a test or “I love you” – it will brighten your child’s day. Download LunchboxJokes_US_01.pdf and print it.

Famf98lunchtogo_chart_2 9. Get ORGANIZED: create you own schedule Monday-Friday of the menu you will prepare for lunch so that you know every morning or the night before what to do for lunch boxes.

10. CONSULT:  check out these sites for other fun and easy to do ideas for lunch boxes: www.familyfun.com and the Lunch Box Builder, and if your family is vegetarian, you may want to visit Vegetarian Lunch Box.

All these tips and ideas, will be available for download, print and laminate in our Useful Documents module on the left sidebar of the blog.

"Lunch boxing" can be an enjoyable activity!

Lb_1sandwiches_f1_3 Today, in our PART II of lunch box ideas, we want to present you with nutritious, delicious and easy to make lunch boxes.  Remember, lunch boxes are not meant to replace any of three meals in the day, they are supposed to supplement the body to maintain its energy and glucose level in line.

Option 1: 1 small yogurt, wheat ham & mustard sandwich, 1 clementine, a drink;

Option 2: Wheat crackers with cheese and marmalade, an apple or jello, a juice box;

Option 3: 1 milk box or drinkable yogurt, a banana and a bag of cookies (i.e. mini Oreo cookies);

Option 4: Drinkable yogurt, wheat ham & cheese sandwich, pitted olives in halves or grape tomatoes, jello;

Option 5: 1 small yogurt, 1/2 cup of cereal, strawberries, baby carrots, a drink;

Option 7: Small turkey wrap, 50g pretzels, baby carrots, a drink, 1/2 grapes;

Option 8: Small bowl of Pasta salad, grape tomatoes, 1 clementine, a drink;

Option 9: Baby carrots with yogurt, mustard and honey dip, 1 small slice of cake, 1/2 cup of grapes, wheat crackers with cream cheese;

You can mix and combine these 10 options above. The important thing here is to give your children nutritious and tasty food while at school.  They will love it, plus they will be looking forward to eating at home when they get back.
